Savikko Park Performance Pavillion
Savikko Park Pavillion Project UpdateThe Douglas 4th of July Committee is working on a new project: A Performance Pavilion at Savikko Park, Douglas.
When finished, the pavillion will provide a covered, open space for music, dance, speaking, static displays and other performances during holidays and other special events. It will also serve as an additional covered picnic shelter when not used for performances and other official events.
The squared log structure has been under construction since April 2009. It will be similar in style to the current log picnic shelter and the Yakutat US Forest Service performance pavilion as designed by Jenson, Yorba and Lott, Inc.
The logs were supplied by Icy Straits Logging. CBJ Parks and Recreation designated a foot pad location in the 2nd ball field for the pavilion.
Donations of money and time have been given by: The Pioneers of Alaska, Holland-American, Douglas Advisory Committee, Gold Rush Days, Douglas 4th of July Committee, The Juneau Steam Ship Co., AGGPRO, Alaska Stone & Concrete Inc., Chatham Electric Inc., Channel Construction Inc., North Pacific Erectors, Silver Bow Construction, Tyler Rental Inc., U.S. Coast Guard, Douglas Volunteer Fire Fighters, and The City & Borough of Juneau.
The pavillion is also a welcome replacement for the "bandstand" of two open shipping container vans provided by the committee for past Independence celebrations.
